The concept that I speak of can apply to any aspect of Modern Arnis.
Arm strength can only get you so far. Applying whole body torque and rotation gives you much more power than doing it with the arm alone. Apply this principle to any of the “traditionals” such as banda y banda, rompida, figure 8 and, in the aforementioned video, the reverse figure 8 and your power will increase.
Just by chance, the below video came up in my YouTube subscription feed today and makes the same point.
As Angel Lemus Sensei says, in part, in the video description: “The way to do it is to apply the hip at the moment that you make contact and penetration begins– plain and simple that is it. This allows you to focus using explosive “SHORT RANGE” or “SHORT STROKE” methodology same as you see internal chinese arts when they use the term “Fajin”- it is the same thing.”
In other words, he is advocating the usage of the whole body at the point of impact as I also demonstrate in my video. As Professor Presas was fond of saying “it is all the same!”
A few years ago, I reviewed an excellent book called “Martial Power” by Steven J. Pearlman. I highly recommend this book if you’re interested in the subject of body mechanics from a martial perspective.
Aristotle had it right when he said
the whole is greater than the sum of its parts
and this applies to the martial arts as well. Don’t forget this!
